House Finance Committee to Meet  Wednesday, June 6, 4:00pm
 
On Wednesday, June 6th at 4pm, the House Finance Committee will meet at the
Anchorage Legislative Information Office (LIO) to take up SB4.  SB 4,
sponsored by Senator Donny Olson, extends the SeniorCare program with an
eligibility limit of 150% FPL, no asset test, and a three-tiered benefit
program tied to income - $175 monthly for households up to 100% FPL, $150
monthly for households up to 135% FPL, and $100 for households up to 150%
FPL.A more inclusive and generous program was proposed by HB 198.  HB 198,
sponsored by Representative Mike Hawker, would have created a new "Alaska
Senior Benefits" program with a similar, three-tiered program, but with an
eligibility limit of 175%, and higher benefits- $250 monthly for households
up to 75% FPL, $175 monthly for households up to 100% FPL, and $125 for
households up to 175% FPL.On Wednesday, the Finance Committee may simply
consider SB 4 in its current form or, the Committee could amend SB 4 to
either reauthorize the current SeniorCare program (with a maximum benefit of
$120 per month) or make it more like the proposed Alaska Senior Benefits
Program.  Now is the time to urge law makers to adopt a more generous
SeniorCare program serving seniors between 75-175% FPL with up to $250 per
