About National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBAAD) is February 7 each year and is
a national mobilization effort designed to encourage African Americans to
get educated, get tested, get involved and get treated in regards to
HIV/AIDS. African American men and women continue to be disproportionately
affected by HIV/AIDS since the epidemic¹s beginning, and that disparity has
deepened over time. At the end of 2005, the Black community represented 12%
of the U.S. population but made up 50% of the AIDS cases. Blacks account
for more HIV/AIDS cases, people estimated to be living with AIDS, and
HIV-related deaths than any other racial/ethnic group. In addition, Blacks
with HIV/AIDS may face greater barriers to accessing care. In 2004, this
population accounted for half of all new HIV diagnoses in the United States
alone. Black women account for the far majority of new AIDS cases among
women (67% in 2005). Black teens (aged 13-19) represent only 15% of the
U.S. teenagers but account for 73% of new AIDS Cases reported among teens in
2004. This national trend is occurring in Alaska as well.
