It was very difficult to read the information about the Syril Rising Star Scholarship...please clarify, is this scholarship only for BSW students? Only at UAA?
  Thank you,

Good morning!

Attached is a list of questions regarding clinical supervision from a new
social worker. If any of you have any advice or suggestions for Thomas,
please email him directly at tpmcroberts at yahoo.com.

Thank you for your continued support of new social workers and your support
of the growing social work community in Alaska. We're all in this together!

Happy Wednesday!

I have recently graduated with an MSW and am
interested in pursuing my LCSW. I have encountered
some barriers to achieving this goal and wonder how
other MSW's have resolved similar barriers.

In order to apply for a license an MSW must have
document 3000 hours of supervised clinical work. My
questions, as follows, have to do with securing
employment while completing these 3000 hours.

1. Can an agency bill Medicaid or insurance companies
for these these supervised hours?

2. What is considered clinical work for these 3000
hours? Must it be individual, family, or group
therapy, or can it include case management or other
social work duties?

3. How have mental health or social service agencies
arranged to hire MSW's who need supervision? If they
can not bill for the 3000 hours, how have non-profits
with tight budgets been able to afford to hire
prospective LCSW's? Are there any grants available to
help non-profits hire MSW's who need supervision?

4. I know that there are agencies in Anchorage that
provide supervision to new MSW's. I live in Homer and
don't know of any who do here. Does anybody know of
any in Homer or the Kenai/Soldotna area? What steps
would an agency have to take to start providing
supervision if they wished to do so.

Thank you very much for your help,
Tom McRoberts
