Hi all – Out of discussion at the social worker conference, I am creating a
website that will address issues of concern to state social workers. The
web address will take you to a site that is just a template today but I will
add to it frequently soliciting input from social workers across the state
and from the NASW Social Action committee.
Don’t expect to find anything of interest on the site today – it
comes with “fill in” content to give the designer some ideas. Keep my email
address handy for future contacts as well skleven at ak.net

I’ll place announcements on the NASWAK list serve, periodically, but
I don’t want to divert the purpose of the NASWAK list serve toward an end
more political or activist in orientation.
The website will be progressive in orientation – I’ll define that on
the web page.
It will include links to information that will help social workers
make action plans and build coalitions toward social justice and other good
ends.
The page will coordinate with the Social Action Committee of NASWAK
but it’s not sponsored or endorsed by anyone at all. The content will be
shaped by contributors. It will be open to constant review and feedback
will be requested. I’ll make a sort of advisory body out of the first few
who link up.
This is the website. If you know already that you want to be part of
this effort please email me off-list. I’ll create a list serve to address
activist issues.

Remember – only the title is done – there is no content yet.
Bio – I’m a clinical social worker and the author of The Right Touch
and Holy Land. I am largely a children’s clinician but I have also worked
as a program developer, faculty member. I first came to Alaska in 1984, to
work in Bethel, as a counselor.

Some issues that will get focus include – how to prepare service
providers new to bush Alaska. How to organize our communities. Issues
with the hospitalization of children. Adoption – how to find homes for
children in Alaska. Social justice in the bush – the courts and all that’s
wrong. How Medicaid hurts social workers. Clinicians and the push to bill.
We will develop a section called action plans and another called
events – in this way we can keep things moving. We’ll post your events
there,too.

Some of these issues, I will address in an initial article or when I
have a lot of energy, a white paper. Others are invited to submit. If I
have a question about content, I’ll confer with others who join up to make a
decision about inclusion.
