Rural Health Care Services Outreach Grant Program
Deadline: October 18, 2006
Amount: $3,750,000 (total estimated program funding)
Eligibility: Eligible applicants include, public and non-profit private
entities, including faith-based and community organizations, applicants in
rural counties or eligible census tracts within an urban county, applicants
providing services exclusively to migrant and seasonal farm workers in rural
areas and supported under Section 330G of the Public Health Services Act and
federally recognized Native American tribe or tribal organization that will
deliver services on a reservation or federally recognized tribal lands.
Description: The Office of Rural Health Policy's Health Care Services
Outreach Program encourages the development of new and innovative health
care delivery systems in rural communities that lack essential care
services. The emphasis of the grant program is on service delivery through
creative strategies requiring the grantee to form a consortium with at least
two additional partners. Programs funded have varied greatly and have
brought care that would not otherwise have been available to at least 2
million rural citizens across the country. Through consortia of schools,
churches, emergency medical service providers, local universities, private
practitioners and the like, rural communities have managed to create hospice
care, bring health check-ups to children, and provide prenatal care to women
in remote areas.

Focus on Grantmakers: Wal-Mart
By Kristan Hutchison
Despite the controversy surrounding the retail giant, there’s no questioning
Wal-Marts business success. The international company brought in $312
billion last year, then turned around and gave $200 million back to
charities in the communities it serves. The seven Alaskan stores distributed
a total of $585,752 to local causes and organizations in 2005. Marisa
Bluestone from Wal-Mart headquarters gave an overview of the company’s
corporate giving strategy, which is based on local control. Then Marcellne
Deering, the community involvement coordinator for the Fairbanks Wal-Mart,
explained how the corporate giving program works in that store.

Weatherization weathers the times
By Kristan Hutchison
With heating oil costs rising and September around the corner, some Alaskans
are wishing they had money to better insulate their homes. The Alaska
Housing Finance Corporation funds weatherization programs around the state.
Program Officer Mimi Burbage explained how the weatherization program works,
and why it is unable to keep up with the long lists of low-income homes
needing weatherization.
